Wande Abimbola — UNESCO Champion of Ifá
Biography of Wande Abimbola, the Yoruba scholar and Babaláwo who secured UNESCO recognition for Ifá divination
Wande Abimbola (1932–present)
Scholar, Babaláwo, and Cultural Ambassador#
Professor Wande Abimbola is a Nigerian linguist, literary scholar, politician, and initiated Babaláwo (Ifá divination priest) who has been the foremost advocate for the global recognition and preservation of Ifá. His decades of work combining scholarly research with insider knowledge as a practicing divination priest culminated in UNESCO's 2005 proclamation of Ifá as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Academic Career#
Born in Oyo, Nigeria, Abimbola became the first scholar to systematically document the vast oral literary corpus of Ifá divination. His works include:
- Ifá Divination Poetry (1977) — the first comprehensive English-language scholarly analysis of Ifá literary texts
- Ifá Will Mend Our Broken World (1997) — connecting Ifá wisdom to contemporary ethical and ecological challenges
- Sixteen Great Poems of Ifá (1975) — detailed translations and analysis of the sixteen principal Odù
He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ifẹ̀ (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and as a senator in the Nigerian National Assembly.
UNESCO Campaign#
Abimbola led the successful campaign to have Ifá recognized by UNESCO, arguing that:
- The Ifá corpus represents one of the largest bodies of oral literature in the world
- The 256 Odù contain thousands of verses (ese) covering every aspect of human existence
- Ifá preserves historical, philosophical, and scientific knowledge developed over centuries
- The tradition was at risk as fewer young people undertook the decades-long training required
The UNESCO recognition in 2005 was a landmark moment for the global recognition of African intellectual traditions.
Significance#
Abimbola represents a model of scholarship that the HigherSelf Knowledge Base aspires to: combining rigorous academic methodology with deep respect for and participation in living spiritual traditions. He demonstrated that Ifá is not merely a divination technique but a comprehensive philosophical system comparable to any world wisdom tradition.
